ICSI andPICSI
Microinjection of a sperm into the egg. It allows the fastest, strongest, and most suitable sperm to be selected, for better performance in in vitro fertilization.
Estimated duration
It is performed on the same day as follicular aspiration, within the IVF cycle timeline.
Clinical area
Trained embryologists and andrologists.
Where it is performed
Within our assisted reproduction laboratory.
Support
The medical team and PLANEA staff will provide comprehensive, close follow-up throughout your treatment. Our commitment is to guide you through clear, transparent and timely communication.
What are ICSI and PICSI?
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is a fertilization technique used within an IVF cycle: a selected sperm is introduced directly into the oocyte. In selected situations PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) may be added as a complementary sperm-selection technique before performing ICSI.
Who is it indicated for?
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is usually indicated when there is a significant male factor, such as a very low sperm count, reduced motility or major sperm-quality alterations; it may also be used when fertilization failed or was very low in a previous IVF cycle. In ICSI, the embryologist introduces one sperm directly into the egg. PICSI (physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is a variation of ICSI that aims to select sperm capable of binding to hyaluronic acid, something only mature sperm can do, as an additional selection criterion. It has been proposed especially when there are certain sperm-quality problems or a history of unfavorable reproductive outcomes. In general, PICSI does not replace ICSI: it is a sperm-selection technique performed before microinjection.
We work, step by step
- 1Follicular aspiration and semen sample preparation
- 2Sperm selection (PICSI when indicated)
- 3Microinjection of the sperm into the oocyte
- 4Embryo culture and developmental assessment
It is performed on the same day as follicular aspiration, within the IVF cycle timeline.
Technology and technique at CEMPI
Sperm micromanipulation techniques performed in the embryology laboratory. ICSI introduces a selected sperm directly into the egg to support fertilization. PICSI adds a sperm-selection method based on hyaluronic acid binding capacity, supporting sperm selection in indicated cases. The embryos are then cultured in incubators with controlled conditions and monitoring of embryo development.
